Great Regulars: Thirteen years ago, [Rita] Dove's home

was struck by lightning. Both she and her husband, the German writer Fred Viebahn, escaped unharmed. But much of the house and all of their work was destroyed in the resulting fire. Several weeks later, friends tried to lift the couple's spirits by taking them ballroom dancing, and it was the start of a brand-new passion for them. Dove even published a collection of poetry about dancing called "American Smooth."
