"Collected Poems" is, however, a revelation, almost certainly among the two or three most important books of poetry that will be published this year. His poetry is helped, not hurt, by this context and relative abundance. Around this book's margins a scruffy and blood-warm autobiography emerges. Three great love affairs are chronicled pointillistically. (Mr. Gilbert has been married only once, to the sculptor Michiko Nogami, who died of cancer in 1982 at 36.) But so are infidelity and lust and howling varieties of pain.
