Great Regulars: As a general observation, one can say

that till the beginnings of the renaissance in Europe in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the main channel of the intellectual communication of a religious tradition was from Insider to Insider. This began to change with the rise of the West and the onset of the modern era. In this phase, as the West became familiar with the religions of the Americas, Africa and Asia, the main mode of transmission about these religions became that from Outsider to Outsider.

They also claim with authority to have 'academically proved and established' that [Sri] Ramakrishna [Paramahamsa] was a child molester, and one who also forced homosexual activities on Swami Vivekananda. They consider Ramakrishna's mystical experiences and those of other Indian mystics in general as pathological sexual symptoms and conditions which are badly in need of psychoanalysis.

''Scholarly'' works produced by specially hired scholars under the overall feaudal tutelage and pecuniary stranglehold of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and Religion in South Asia (RISA) are being used by American Christian groups to describe Hinduism as a 'dirty dignity destroying religion' and as a 'pig-pen from the east'. Let me give some examples to illustrate this point.

I fully endorse the view of Rajiv Malhotra that there is the alarming possibility that the combined failure of Indian-Americans to translate their personal professional success into respect for their cultures and traditions might lead to a condition paralleling that of Jews in Europe before the II World War and in the event of an unforeseen or sudden economic downturn in the not very distant future, they could easily become scapegoats in America.

I would like to oppose these charlatans and quacks from the West by quoting the blazing words of Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the great Russian poet: "Mankind is essentially a single organism, a single body, a single soul. But can we imagine a body surviving if it were hacked into little pieces (even if in these little pieces artificial dams were to be constructed for normal blood circulation)? Would anybody withstand such bestial torture? Yet mankind endures, somehow; even hacked to pieces it somehow exists, and its separate little pieces pulsate, breathe, hope, strive to coalesce. Clearly mankind is a special kind of organism, a special kind of body and soul, possessing supernatural powers of survival."

Though it cannot be said that Ramakrishna was a child molester or Swami Vivekananda was a homo (no evidence), when we study the Complete Works of Vivekananda and the diary on Ramakrishna's daily meetings, there arises an irresistable impression that all is not Tinopal/Surf Excel white with Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. There are gray areas which need deeper penetration with the help of archives and writings between 1863 and 1920 approx. While conducting analytical studies and research works, there cannot be any slander. One will have to be extremely careful in deducing and benefit of doubt is to be given. In Telugu there is a proverb: Duurapu kond`alu Nunupu which on translation reads some thing like: Hills at a distance look very smooth and when we go nearer the ditches will be visible.
We love Hinduism and its tenets. We may have to defend it when others throw rubbish. Simultaneously, we have to search into the distant hills and find out how smooth they are. This does not mean that we are going to look at only the black things.

About NRIs and PIOs (Persons of Indian origin in U.S.A. : Better they melt down in the main stream of Americans by giving and taking in every area. Otherwise as pointed out by Shri Sundaram, when there is a depression or some shake down, Indians may be treated as Jews and become scapegoats.

Example: Shri N. Chandra Babu Naidu former of CM of AP recently addressed a meeting of Telugus in USA. He praised them by raising them to skies saying that someday a Telugu or an Indian will become President of USA. This type of utterances when reported in American TV/Press can cause jealosy, suspicion, envy, racial hatred and jeopardise the interests of the Indians in USA. It will be better if NRIs and PIOs do not frequently invite Indian politicians to USA.

Dear multisubj yb,

Thank you for taking a moment to comment as you have, a terrific comment. Your first paragraph is elucidating and purposefully told. After reading it, I agree.

On your view of Non-Resident Indians (NRI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), I was with you in your first thought, going with Shri Sundaram, that they should "melt" in, or maybe "bond" in is the better thought.

However, this would include, not only showing and sharing culture, but political views as well. The glasses need to be raised, and the politicians welcomed in, no matter the ruckus anticipated. Indeed, the ruckus should be part of the integrational strategy.

If their value and contributions in all arenas--all the various sports included, various studies and vocations included, various political persuasions included--are obvious, then it becomes much more difficult to scapegoat such a diverse grouping of people.

Let's watch POIs and NRIs in their arguments with each other. Let's watch them wrestle for different schools. Let's see some PIO heartbreaks and some NRI champions.

Yours,
Rus
