Great Regulars: So much for our impression of the Middle Ages

as a time of strict self-denial. Well, perhaps it was for many, but the Goliards knew how to run amok. So much so that they make the American beat poets of the 1950s seem like Boy Scouts by comparison. For example, in some districts in France, they held a celebration in which a donkey dressed in a costume was led to the chancel.
