with [W.D.] Snodgrass's own life, particularly the loss of his daughter Cynthia in a harsh custody battle with the first of his four wives. The title poem demonstrates most formidably his poetic range and power. One verse in its fifth stanza is justifiably his best-known:
Winter again and it is snowing;
Although you are still three,
You are already growing
Strange to me.
But the next stanza demonstrates Snodgrass's dramatic range.
