Poetic Obituaries: [David] Bromige published more than 40 books

of poetry and won dozens of awards, including a Western States Arts Federation award in 1988 for his collection "Desire." He was also Sonoma County's second poet laureate, serving from 2001 to 2003.

Known for his avant-garde style and razor wit, Mr. Bromige was considered part of the San Francisco poetry renaissance of the late 1960s and early '70s, colleagues said. His use of language and dialect was so subtle yet exact that a reader would not always absorb a poem until after finishing it, said Pennsylvania poet and friend Ron Silliman.
