[Carl] Sandburg's drive came partly from his industrious parents, according to Penelope Niven, author of "Carl Sandburg: A Biography." His father labored 35 years as a blacksmith's helper for a railroad while his mother raised seven children.
Niven says Sandburg's biggest obstacles were feelings of inferiority due to his humble roots.
