Great Regulars: "This light verse is very skillfully written--

notice the rhyme scheme throughout and how the non-rhyme of the fourth line in each verse has a muting effect. The speaker's age is mirrored in the season--"autumn leaves" and "woollen sleeves"--and the sense of despondency is made all the more poignant by the reference to "a gentleman I haven't seen for twenty years".
