News at Eleven: Here and elsewhere [Christian] Wiman's

impassioned language reveals the spiritual struggle at the heart of his poetry, the dilemma of being caught between a belief that might disappoint and a disbelief that is intolerable. When you can't ask for mercy and grace, and you can't not ask, what else is there to do but suffer?

Not all of the poems, it should be mentioned, are overtly religious.
