News at Eleven: [Craig Raine's] poem "Rashomon", about a woman's rape

and the murder of her samurai husband, is unsparing and brilliant. It is his autobiographical poems that are harder to take. Nothing is too humble, humiliating or inconsequential (in his witty poem "High Table", the approach pays off flamboyantly).

But his mother is also not spared the treatment.
