Dear Poetry Aficionados,
Poetry & Poets in Rags blog
Toyo Shibata, the popular Japanese poet who started writing in her 90s, will be 100 in June. This is our first story. Our fourth is a pair of links on Elizabeth Bishop, whose 100th birthday would have been next Tuesday. In between, Charlotte Higgins writes on Jo Shapcott being awarded the Costa, then Jackie Kay writes on the "beautiful renaissance" of poetry, and in doing so notes how three women are the bards of Great Britain, Liz Lochhead, Gillian Clarke, and Carol Ann Duffy. This opening of remarkable female poets is furthered, then, with a review of C.D. Wright's latest book. By the way, in Great Regulars, Sarah Crown also writes on Jo Shapcott, and offers a video interview of her, wherein she reads her award-winning poetry.
But we do have articles on and poetry by male poets as well, and more females poets than noted above, for instance in Great Regulars by Fiona Sampson. I should note too that the situation in Egypt is covered by Great Regulars John Timpane and René Wadlow, but that this isn't the only world news address by the poets and writers this week.
I must let you get to your reading. It's a fine week for it. Thanks for clicking in.
Yours,
Rus
