Poetic Obituaries: The Nazis expanded anti-gay laws to

make homosexual acts a felony. In 1937, [Rudolf] Brazda was denounced and arrested for "unnatural lewdness". Presented with love letters and poems he had written to his then partner, he "confessed" to the relationship and was imprisoned for six months for "debauchery".

Arrested again in 1941, Brazda spent another six months in jail, then in August 1942 was sent to Buchenwald, where he was given the number 7952. "I didn't understand what was happening but what could I do? Under Hitler you were powerless," he recalled.
