IBPC: Poetry & Poets in Rags
I believe we have never had so many links in one week, nor links to whole poems before, and the main reason for this has to do with multiple poetry links for Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, or Poppy Day, whichever you prefer to call it. The Sunday Times brings to us 10 poems by living poets. The Guardian brings us 8 from World War I poets. A combination that makes for a great perspective, and great reflection for the holiday. We also link to 4 additional articles for the occasion in News at Eleven alone. Also, as too often is the case, in Poetic Obituaries, a soldier who wrote poetry has recently died.
Almost unbelievably, this art of the soldier is not our lead story today. Poet Saw Wai has been sentenced to two years in Insein prison, blogger Nay Phone Latt to 20, and other activists to 65 years. Thanks to Peter Garner for sending me the second link for that story, the one from the Times. I had an earlier, but less detailed one prepared. But good God, how the hell can we straighten out that situation, to get those in political charge behind bars, and the ones behind bars in political charge? It's got to be done. Look into this and blog about it if you have a blog.Some notes about our Great Regulars section. Sarah Crown has been away for a good part of the year, and it is great to read her again. Garrison Keillor and Linda Sue Grimes both are enjoying the same Wendell Berry poem this week, "How to Be a Poet." Frieda Hughes talks about her remarkable garden with stones. And we have two additions. Well overdue is Hillel Italie, who writes for the Associated Press, this week on John Ashbery. And Rhode Island poet Tom Chandler looks like he'll have a monthly submitted poem for us online readers. And among the deaths of Poetic Obituaries, are editor John Leonard, and poet James Liddy.
