Great Regulars: For me, at least, these lines highlight

[Robert] Lowell's thorny predicament, namely his desire not to be marginalized or banished from his own existence. Put another way: Sometimes it helps to ask of a poem, what hurts? The ache of erasure is what hurts in this one.
