Poetic Obituaries: In the mid- to late 1970s he began

translating poetry found on the walls of the detention barracks at Angel Island Immigration Station, the point of entry through much of the first half of the 20th century for Chinese immigrants, including [Him Mark] Lai's father, who was on the first shipload to arrive in 1910. Later, with Judy Yung and Genny Lim, Lai wrote "Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940" (1991).
