Poetic Obituaries: [Kamala Suraiyya] began to produce evocative

short stories under the name of Madhavikutty, written in her mother tongue, Malayalam. She also produced deeply personal poems (in English) under the name of K Das.

"Dress in sarees, be girl/Be wife, they said. Be embroiderer, be cook,/Be a quarreller with servants. Fit in. Oh,/Belong, cried the categorisers, Don't sit/On walls or peer in through our lace-draped windows. Be Amy, or be Kamala. Or better/Still, be Madhavikutty...," she wrote in An Introduction from her first collection of poems, Summer in Calcutta (1965).
