collected tales from his medical career in a book called, "Yes, I Make House Calls." He also wrote poetry and when his daughters were young, twisted words around to create a nonsensical language he dubbed "Patchicaloop."
Retiring from medicine in the late 1970s, Dr. Hirshfield continued to write and expanded his organic garden. After the death of his daughter Jo-Anne, he started a poetry competition in her name at the Evanston Public Library, open to students and unpublished writers, that is now in its 32nd year.
