needs reconstructing. In one fragment of her own writing, which she reprints four times here, she begins to explain: "My brother ran away in 1978, rather than go to jail . . . He was travelling on a false passport and living under other people's names . . . I don't know how he made his decisions in those days. The postcards were laconic. He wrote only one letter, to my mother, that winter the girl died." And she reproduces the letter, too. It is ripped, quite carefully.
