News at Eleven: [Geoffrey] Hill is a far edgier poet

than any of the swaggering, finger-clicking non-entities who claim to be taking poetry to the people. Hill is far edgier, far better, and far more important.

He is a remarkable poet, one with a panoramic knowledge not only of his native England--its history, its landscape, its art, its architecture--but also of the mythological and ecclesiastical splendours of Europe.

The typical poem will range imperiously over theology, philosophy, art and history, always with a view to exploring such issues as the causes and consequences of political violence, the role of the martyr, or the nature of patriotism.
