News at Eleven: In On the Lowell Beat: My Times with Jack Kerouac,

[Billy] Koumantzelis offers unvarnished pieces of the man he came to regard as a brother. No one will confuse the 29 tracks as some celebrity whitewash. Kerouac drinks, and drinks, and drinks. He throws a bottle at Koumantzelis one night, shifts from joy to anger at whiplash speed, and is rescued from Omar's Pool Hall after addressing its mostly African-American patrons with the "n-word." There is more than one story involving public urination.

"Poor guy," Koumantzelis said. "Always did have bad kidneys."
