poems written by incarcerated children in Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall. Recognized throughout the nation as one of the most progressive juvenile detention centers in the country, the local facility has, for over 10 years, hosted writing workshops led by staff and volunteers of The Beat Within. Writing generated by The Beat Within workshops is typed, edited, commented on, and published in a journal of the same name. The journal, often 60 pages, or more, in length, is distributed to the minors on a weekly basis. There is also an on-line version of The Beat Within (thebeatwithin.org).What I Saw Today
