Poetic Obituaries: When war broke out he [Herbert Eisner]

was interned on the Isle of Man with a number of other German Jews, including members of the future Amadeus Quartet. From there he joined the Army where, because of his German origins, he adopted the name Evans--and with it the inevitable nickname Taffy. Posted to India, he repaired tanks and recited poetry to the tiny Jewish community in Kerala.
