Poetic Obituaries: At Essex he [Stanley Mitchell] established

MA courses in literary translation and in the sociology of literature. His seminars on Onegin examined the faults of existing translations, Pushkin's verse patterns, his varying style and intonations--everything that made the work unique. Only decades later did he begin his own translation. Charles Johnston's 1977 version was the first to have got beyond translator's doggerel and achieve English verse. Stanley's was closer to Pushkin's voice than anyone had thought possible.
