News at Eleven: Divorced and with two kids to raise, [Gerald] Stern

needed the prodding of another renowned poet and close friend, C.K. Williams, to get him going. Williams called Stern and told him to send some poems to his publisher at Houghton Mifflin. Stern dithered, making up some excuse why he couldn't, and then Williams said: "That's very interesting what you're saying, but he's expecting them tomorrow."

The result was "Lucky Life," published by Houghton Mifflin in 1977, when Stern was 52. The book brought Stern his first taste of success.
