Poetic obituaries: James Kirkup, who has died aged 91,

was an extraordinarily prolific writer in many genres. Though perhaps best known as a poet, he was also an accomplished translator of verse, prose and drama, a fine travel writer, a dramatist and an autobiographer of distinction. His varied achievements as a writer have unfortunately been overshadowed, in Britain at least, by an episode in which the publication in 1976 of one his poems in Gay News led to the last successful prosecution for blasphemy.
