beat her only challenger Arvind Mehrotra, a relatively little known Indian poet, by 297 votes to 129.
The victor, who has been chairman of the UK Poetry Society since 2003, said she was "honoured and humbled" to take the £6,901-a-year post.
But she said her victory had been "poisoned" by a smear campaign that prompted Derek Walcott, 79, a Saint Lucia-born Nobel laureate, to withdraw from the contest last week. Election sources said the 51 spoiled ballots was an unusually high number.
