But because his best friend was better at drawing than him, Rafael turned instead to poetry and songs. He became interested in journalism and gravitated toward vallenato, the accordion-based music of Colombia's Atlantic coast with lyrics rooted in a narrative tradition. He grew up listening to the peasants and troubadours of the region, and wrote his first song when he was 15.
