in Patillal, a town on Colombia's Atlantic coast. Although his middle-class family considered such a calling unbecoming, as a child he thought of becoming a painter or cartoonist. But because his best friend was better at drawing than him, Rafael turned instead to poetry and songs. He became interested in journalism and gravitated toward vallenato, the accordion-based music of Colombia's Atlantic coast with lyrics rooted in a narrative tradition. He grew up listening to the peasants and troubadours of the region, and wrote his first song when he was 15.
