News at Eleven: "For me, poetry is a space where

I'm entirely alone and I can really dig into things that terrify, disturb, or frighten me. And I feel that it's OK," he [Carl Phillips] said.

He added that it's difficult to be vulnerable in life and easier to be vulnerable on the page but even more difficult to walk with the page into a reading and present those private thoughts.

"My poetry isn't entertainment," he said. "It's casting light on subjects that most people would like to keep unlit."
