a part of London he would, he says, once have mocked for being genteel and suburban. Liverpool is still his spiritual home. And because a play of his, The Hypochondriac, recently opened there, he has been up and down on the train a lot. Always the train because the rhythms help him write. And he cannot drive. "Liverpool is a small place. Everyone seems to know me. I put some money in a busker's trumpet case the other day and he said: 'Thanks, Rog!' So thank goodness I coughed up! And not long ago another busker played Lily the Pink as I walked past."
