News at Eleven: [Ted Hughes] got his hands dirty.

One of the finest poets of our age learnt a lot about sewage.

Today, his warnings have an eerily prophetic ring. Margaret Thatcher's great failing, he believed, was an inability to grasp "the real horror" of environmental pollution. A year before his death, Hughes wrote: "I seriously feel the whole bickering struggle between commerce and husbandry will be overtaken on the grandest scale by global warming."
