Poetic Obituaries: [Tom Hoving] succeeded [James J.] Rorimer as director

of the Met in April 1967. Hoving set about his task at the "moribund" museum with as much relish as he had applied as parks commissioner. He introduced plays and poetry readings in the galleries and announced plans for a new contemporary arts department as well as the installation of the Temple of Dendur, a gift from the United Arab Republic, in the museum grounds.
