Poetic Obituaries: Dame Beryl [Bainbridge] was a five-times Booker prize nominee

and won the Whitbread novel award twice.

Her novels included The Dressmaker, turned into a film starring Billie Whitelaw and Pete Postlethwaite, Master Georgie and The Bottle Factory Outing.

At the time of her death she was putting the finishing touches to her latest book, The Girl In The Polka-Dot Dress.
