when we put part of it in a container, when we separate out a portion that can stand for the whole thing. When we choose a day, a holiday, for instance, that stands for the entire creation of a country.
My poem's about one particular Fourth of July, but it stands for all Fourths of July, and it stands also for the human endeavor to make sense of things and to celebrate being human.
