News at Eleven: Like teaching, poetry is not a way

to riches, although interest has increased, partly due to the popularity of hip-hop music. "Hip-hop artists are modern day poets. If I was still teaching, I would ask students to bring in the lyrics to hip-hop songs," says [Taylor] Mali.

Mali is one of the few people in the United States who makes his living from poetry. He says about a third of his shows are at colleges and a third at middle and high schools. The rest are at teaching conferences, where he also presents writing workshops and talks about how to teach poetry.
