Great Regulars: As he [Salman Rushdie] explains in his extraordinary

new memoir, he spent a decade living under the pseudonym "Joseph Anton," a combination of Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekhov's first names.

"He had spent his life naming fictional characters," Rushdie writes. "Now by naming himself he had turned himself into a sort of fictional character as well . . . 'Joseph Anton,' he told himself, 'you must live until you die.'"

from John Freeman: The Plain Dealer: Salman Rushdie reclaims his own life in memoir 'Joseph Anton'
