These are stories we think we know, or must have heard, or believe ourselves at least capable of overhearing, though in fact (even, for instance, when they imaginatively trace the life and times of Grendel of Beowulf) they are entirely fabular and, perhaps, entirely metaphysical as well. Symbol, allegory, archetype, abstract and associative imagery: these are the building-blocks that top Chen's landscapes.
