Poetic Obituaries: Appointed to serve as the town's first poet laureate

in 2006, [Brenda] Connor-Bey spent her final years promoting the arts and coordinating workshops, which gave people an opportunity to harness their creative impulses and develop new skills. She also created a series that brings amateur and established authors together to develop poetry based on visual arts.

For years, Connor-Bey examined black culture in her poems, writing about life in Harlem and about African-American women.
