Great Regulars: John [Updike] was unfailingly--

almost comically--modest. His submissions to The New Yorker were almost invariably accompanied by a little note apologizing for the enclosed piece and saying that the magazine couldn't possibly want it, etc. And he was the same way in conversation. If you complimented him on a story, he'd say something suggesting that that one was just a lucky fluke.
