Great Regulars: [Samuel Johnson] finished several great projects

before his death in 1784, including the inimitable Lives of the Poets. He was a marvel of a writer: almost any sentence of his is memorable. Whatever his demons, and maybe because of them, his work exemplifies the sanest balance between the "large expanded mind" and "the flame of genius". The quill pen may be under glass in a museum: the words still glisten with life. Many Happy Returns, Dr Johnson.
