News at Eleven: One day she found [Rabindranath] Tagore busily

scribbling poems. She wanted to know what they were about. Tagore instantly translated them verbally, and [Victoria] Ocampo felt that they were the most sublime lines she had ever heard. The following morning, at breakfast, however, Tagore showed her the written translation of the poems. She was horrified, and asked him why he had not retained the first translation he had done extempore the previous day. Tagore said he thought western readers would not appreciate that.
