News at Eleven: Growing up, Arline G. Wright was told

if she tried to read, she would die. If she was caught trying to read, she would be whipped and vinegar would be poured into her wounds.

Now nearing her 65th birthday, Wright has written at least 40 poems, is a member of writing groups in Springfield and Holyoke and is planning to publish a book of poetry.
