from Guyana in 1977, Grace Nichols has written widely for both children and adults. This poem comes from her new collection--Picasso, I Want My Face Back (Bloodaxe).
Wildly original--a poem in the voice of the Empire State Building--this is in some ways a war poem ("the twin kingdoms have gone") but one which gestures, literally, towards peace in the lovely image of Western architecture reaching out to touch "the minarets of those mosques".
