News at Eleven: If, as Adam Gopnik has suggested,

modern men identify with Hamlet "because every man sees himself as a disinherited monarch," and women choose Alice "because every woman sees herself as the only reasonable creature among crazy people who think that they are disinherited monarchs," then [Gwyneth] Lewis has met her archetype. Even more likely, in the saga's stroll through dangerous turf, she's channeling Alice's American cousin, Dorothy of Kansas: "There's something wild,/a presence I can't identify" suggests "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!"

from The San Francisco Chonicle: 'A Hospital Odyssey,' by Gwyneth Lewis
