Poetic Obituaries: Long-time friend [of Sylvia Laramore-Crawford],

Eris Moncur, remembered Mrs Laramore-Crawford yesterday as a woman of many talents who made an indelible mark on the Bahamian arts scene.

"She was an author, poet, storyteller, dress designer, actress, she dabbled in a bit of singing too and at one time taught etiquette in Nassau," said Mr Moncur, an historian who lives on Cat Island.

"In Cat Island we regard her as a cultural icon, she also was an activist, and was a great help to the rake 'n scrape festival being established here. [. . ."]

Sylvia was a great warrior, who love her country and family, sometimes misunderstood, but I loved her dearly. Sleep on my sister and have your rest. Together again with Richard

It is very unfortunate that artists (authors, poets, painters, musicians, etc.) are sometimes only recognized after death. Such a shame that while they are alive and making their contribution they are sometimes overlooked, misunderstood or even found unacceptable. I will remember Mrs. Crawford for the great impact she had on me as a writer, and for her efforts to establish somewhat of a "Poets Society" in Cat Island. She truly appreciated the Arts and encouraged others to explore and appreciate as well. May her soul rest in peace...
