Poetic Obituaries: In her mid-50s, Vivien Noakes went up as a

mature student to read English at Somerville College, Oxford. After graduating with a First and a senior scholarship, she took a doctorate with a thesis on the First World War poet Isaac Rosenberg, and stayed on at the college, briefly, as a don.

In 2004 she published an exemplary comprehensive edition of Rosenberg's poems and plays, the fruit of years of patient poring over fragmented manuscripts. "When I unfolded the papers I literally had trench mud falling out of them," she recalled. In 2008 she edited his complete works, published as the first volume in OUP's 21st-Century Oxford Authors series.
