could go along as her family fled the authoritarian regime of Ferdinand Marcos in Manila in 1970; there was only a whirlwind week to prepare to move nine people from the Philippines to Spain, where her mother's family lived. What didn't fit in [Sofia] Starnes' suitcase she had to leave behind.It was a defining moment in Starnes' life that eventually led to her passion for poetry.
