Great Regulars: A garden is not a jungle, even though

we like to use the word to indicate a wild tangle of neglect. In a jungle there is a continual process of growth and destruction: dead wood keeps falling from the canopy, and one is well advised, during any high wind in the rain-forest, to make for open ground, to seek safety on the river bank. There is continual destruction and continual renewal.

from James Fenton: The Guardian: Come into the garden
