I knew Marianne Nault in the early 80s when she was a tutor for the Extramural Department at Birmingham University. Every fortnight for two or three winters, a dozen of us would fetch up at Pershore Library or at the Angel Inn & Posting House on Pershore High Street to discuss books. We were a motley group, but for me the sessions were a lifeline: a few hours when I could leave my two small children in the care of their father and stretch my mind a bit.
Quite simply, Marianne was an exceptional teacher. She was knowledgeable, fair, lively and focused; she wore her immense learning lightly. Nearly thirty years on, I feel that it was a great privilege to have known Marianne and to have learned from her.
