as many of my poems do, with an ordinary observation: boats turned over on the beach. My mood at the time was a little melancholy, and the poem might've easily headed in the direction of a lament, but the quality of light--especially light over water--has the capacity to improve moods, and the presence of a couple of laughing gulls in the group of gulls that day was a fortunate coincidence. I'm thankful for whoever named laughing gulls."
