News at Eleven: As a college student in the 1970s,

[Bob] Tremmel was writing his dissertation on poets teaching English classes. At the time, [Mary] Swander was teaching high school English at Mater Dei High School in Clinton, where Tremmel shadowed her for a week.

He still remembers when he realized she was not just any English teacher.

"We were walking to the classroom where she was teaching, and we passed by the science lab (and) there was a duck mounted in there," Tremmel said. "She went in, grabbed the duck, then asked her students to write something from the point of view of the duck."
